Default How Difficult Is It For Men To Be on A Diet?

I've read an article on a website where a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association was quoted saying that most men don't want to be on a diet because they think that they'll be eating nothing but salads.

    That's how I actually feel.

    What about you?

Obviously those men have never been on a low-carb diet which is salad with a side of bacon followed by a cheeseburger minus the bun...

I think being "on a diet", of any sort, is infinitely more difficult than adopting a set of personal nutritional guidelines and a relationship with food that keeps you easily and perpetually lean.

Most people have such a poor idea of the caloric value of most food and how many calories that they're actually burning that when they do diet, they often eat at way to much of a deficit and some of the negative metabolic/appetite reactions rear their head pretty quickly and ferociously. When folks start paying attention to calories, the actual calorie value of foods and how many calories they're actually burning daily it's pretty easy to realize that one can pretty much eat all the lean meat they could ever want and still lose weight. Then there is also so much incorrect information that is mainstream from the 6-8 meal a day crap to hours of cardio being the key to losing weight.

I think for a diet to work it has to almost have some sort of ideological purpose, a la paleo. Nothing has ever worked for me besides paleo, m ainly because I've convinced myself that grains/carbs will kill me. So I don't eat them. I am the leanest I've been since high school. Plan on leaning out further with the help of fit day and a food scale.

Just get to know the food you are eating - thats how you're going to be friends with your mind and body. Or you'll get at least a good feeling of whats good and whats bad for you.

I like cutting more than bulking that's for sure.
"Most men" don't like dieting because they haven't read a book, they just know what they're girlfriend is doing based on the latest celebrity diet in people magazine.

If only "most men" would take the time to read a real book or two.

But do you guys agree that in general, women are better at controlling themselves than men, in terms of dieting?

    -just curious -

No. I don't believe women are better at controlling diet. If anything, they are likely worse, due to hormonal fluctuations.

If it's gonna be for life, then we can call it "healthy lifestyle"

Diet is defined as 'The kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats'
Thus a diet itself is for life. You are concerned with the act of dieting.

I would say you can't *really* generalize on sex. My girlfriend has amazing self control, and would not say she is worse than me at compliance.
It really depends on the person.
