Bacopa monniera is an adaptogenic herb with many uses. It supposedly aids the adaptation of the body to physical or mental stress, aids in thyroid hormone production, and improves mental function. A study published in Psychopharmacology examined the effects of 300 mg daily of a Bacopa monniera extract on mental function over a period of 12 weeks.
Subjects received either 300 mg of a Bacopa monniera extractor a placebo supplement daily for 12 weeks. Before, 5 weeks into, and 12 weeks into supplementation the subjects were tested over a variety of measured relating to mental function. It was found that the Bacopa monniera supplement improved speed of information processing significantly, learning speed, and memory consolidation. These effects were apparent at the 5 week mark, and further improved at the 12 week mark.
With some supplements of this type, one may expect a desensitization effect, where the effects of the supplement diminish over time. In this case, results actually improved over the course of the 12 weeks. It is possible that effects would diminish over a longer periof of time, but the information here shows Bacopa monniera to be most effective when used consistently for longer periods of time. This study is also evidence to support the use if Bacopa monniera as a brain-boosting herb.
